10 T he end of the year is such a busy time for schools. As the current year is winding down, we start to look ahead to next year and the staffing needs of the school. This is the best opportunity to create a great team at your school. At this point in the year it is a good idea to survey your staff, if you haven’t already done so. For planning purposes it is important to know who will be returning and who may be leaving. It is also a good opportunity to ask for any changes in position your staff members may be interested in. You may have a teacher who would rather teach a different grade than they are currently teaching. Gathering this data from the staff helps the administration to assess any changes to current staffing positions and determine which positions will need to be filled for the coming year. Many of you are already interviewing potential candidates. Selecting the right candidate can be a tricky task. Many people interview well, but are not great employees. Some don’t shine during an interview, but are amazing employees. How do you weed through the candidates and select the best candidate for your school? Charter as a Beacon The guiding document of a charter school is the charter itself. The mission and philosophy contained in your charter are the best guides to what you should be looking for in an employee. A seasoned leader of a charter school will know the school’s charter well, and know what qualities to look for to support the charter.
