26 Include on your checklist regular monitoring of hard to supervise areas, like closets, stairwells, or classrooms without windows on the doors. Include written guidelines for one-on- one and adult-to-child interactions including social media. Make sure you have training for educators to be able to identify signs of abuse. Frequently prompt report- ing from your staff, your volunteers, and your students’ parents by asking them directly if they have noticed any signs of abuse or have heard rumors of misconduct. With some new laws, the state office will provide a template or an example. Are there plans to do that for this law, so charter schools can use it as a starting point? Jennifer: There is going to be a web- site, most likely hosted by the Depart- ment of Human Services, with a link from the State Office of Education’s website. It will have the minimum requirements, additional resources, readings, and so forth. The State Board will then learn what’s working and what’s not and come back and revise. What type of funding im- pact will this have on dis- tricts and charter schools in general? Jennifer: The funding is one of the reasons that the bill is delayed a year and isn’t effective immediately. There is no fiscal note attached to the bill at this point. Another unanswered ques- tion out there is, “Will this just be something that gets rolled up inside of the State Office of Education in terms of their overall prevention efforts, such as suicide or bullying preven- tion, or does it end up having its own home?” Where can schools get resources and contact in- formation to be proactive this coming year and start implementing training and preventive measures? Carrie: The hotline for DCFS is 855-323-3237. That’s the hotline you can call to report child abuse. Prevent Child Abuse Utah can offer training and education programs to schools. Give our office a call to see what we’re able to do. We can also connect schools to other resources that they may need. *Jennifer Johnson’s comments in this inter- view represent her own views and not those of the Utah State Board of Education.
