20 “Boards and Directors Empower Each Other” O ne of the unique aspects of public charter schools is that they are governed by their own Governing Board. By contrast, multiple traditional public schools make a district governed by one Board. This aspect offers great opportunities but also great risks. Each charter school can be governed individually in such a way that will ensure the implementation of its specific and unique philosophy as outlined in its charter, vision and mission statement. On the other hand, ineffective governing boards can have a direct negative impact on the success of the school. Furthermore, the relationship between the board and the school administrator is another essential element in the success of a charter school. The question of “what makes an effective charter school board and how can boards and administrators work together effectively”, has been asked since the beginning of the charter movement, and continues to be the subject of arduous debates.
