Jeffrey M. Hirst , CIC Account Executive 448 South 400 East Salt Lake City, Utah 84111 (801) 364-3434 www.american-ins.com As a child, Baldwin was interested in technology and built his own bicycle and steam engine. Determined to get a better education, he walked the 100 miles from Fillmore to Provo and attended what was then Brigham Young Academy. While attending there, he lived in an adobe hut. He completed his education at Stanford. He was also an electrician and air compressor operator and experimented with sound amplification using compressed air. Sound amplification became an obsession and he created the first modern headphone with two very sensitive sound receivers attached to a headband. In each ear piece was a mile of copper wire and a diaphragm made of Mica. He sold the design to the U.S. Navy in 1910. In 1914, Baldwin started a business in East Millcreek, Utah, called The Baldwin Radio Company. He powered the plant and the neighborhood through a hydroelectric generator, which he made out of bicycle wheels and piano wire. The company peaked at 150 employees and $2 million in annual sales in the 1920s. Creating a protected environment for educational opportunities.
