16 Building Your Social Media Here is what we found: 1. Have a purpose. Determine why your school uses social media. Many schools send out communication via email, newsletters or flyers. Emails often get buried, so some schools use social media to “get the word out” on school happenings. Kristen Barnes at Mountainville Academy uses Instagram to “celebrate the amazing things happening ... and also to remind/communicate about upcoming events.” Valerie Jones, Communication and data coordinator for Career Path High (CPH,) uses social media to “communicate school information, share resources, build culture, reinforce norms, engage our community, and aid in retention and recruitment.” W hile recent social distancing may keep us from seeing students, staff and families in person, it doesn’t mean we can’t be social. Many charter schools have already discovered the power of social media in engaging with their school community. UAPCS staff spoke with several schools with strong social media presences to discuss how they use social media to interact.
