Call The “Sister/Midwife” Among the women of Utah of the eighteenth century, the midwives and later women doctors were esteemed highly by the citizens of the territory. These women were an ensign to the hopeful young woman that played a significant role in the fight for women suffrage, theirs was a stirring saga of service and dedication that has little parallel in the west. Patty Bartlett Sessions, the grand old dame of Utah midwifery, delivered 248 babies within one year of arriving in the Salt Lake Valley. In her career, she recorded 3,977 births with only "two difficult cases." She continued to deliver babies until she was about 85 years old. Early Midwives inspired local leaders and Utah women to pursue medical degrees. By the 1800 there were dozens of women who went on to earn their Doctorate of Medicine.
